8. Dolch Word List, 어떻게 활용할까?


지난 회에 소개해 드린 Dolch Word List를 물론 살펴보셨겠죠?^^ 아닌 분들은 지금 당장 7회로 가셔서 쭉 읽어 보시구요.

사실 Dolch Word List는 세계 제 2차대전 중에 만들어진 것이라 세월이 흐르면서 시대에 뒤떨어진 의미없는 목록으로 남을 위기에 처한 적이 있었죠. 하지만 미국 어린이들이 재미있게 읽을 수 있는 읽기 학습용 시리즈에 도입되면서 Dolch Word List는 지금까지도 살아남을 수 있게 되었죠. Dolch Word List를 구제해 준 그 시리즈가 무엇이냐구요? 바로 Dr.Seuss가 편집을 맡았던 I Can Read It Akk By MySelf 시리즈이지요.

한 인터넷 사이트의 자료에 의하면 이 시리즈 중 Dr.Seuss가 1961년에 Theodore LeSieg라는 필명으로 발표한 Ten Apples Up On Top!?에는 75개의 단어가 쓰였는데, 이 중 61개가 Dolch word로 그 책에 사용된 어휘수의 81%를 차지한다고 합니다. Dolch Word List와 이 책의 문장을 직접 비교해 보면 이 사실을 알 수 있는데요, 아래 빨간 단어들은 모두 Dolch Word List에 수록된 것들이죠.

This is not good. What will we do? They want to get our apples, too.

You can not stop our apple fun. Our apples will not drop, not one!
Come on! Come on! Come one! Come all! We have to make the apples fall.
They must not get our apples down. Come on! Come on! Get out of town!

Apples! Apples up on top! All of this must stop, STOP, STOP!
Now all our fun is going to stop! Our apples all are going to drop.
Look! Ten apples on us all! What fun! We will not let them fall

이 외 이 시리즈 중 Green Eggs and Ham의 경우는 87%, Go, Dog, Go는 78%, The Cat in the Hat은 78% , The Cat in the Hat Comes Back은 81%, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish에는 Dolch Word List가 75%를 차지한다고 하니, Dolch Word List의 위력이 정말 대단하죠?
